This week, Pearl Coast Gymnastics proudly took part in RUOK? Day, a national initiative that encourages all Australians to pause and ask a simple but powerful question — “Are you okay?” The day is a reminder that meaningful conversations can make a real difference, especially when someone may be struggling with life’s challenges.
For our athletes, RUOK? Day was an opportunity to learn how to support each other both inside and outside the gym. By practising these conversations in a safe and fun environment, they can build the confidence to check in with their friends and know when to reach out to a coach or trusted adult for extra support.
Our celebrations combined connection with community spirit. Athletes joined in a game of conversation bingo, which helped them strengthen relationships with teammates and coaches by encouraging thoughtful chats. Everyone came dressed in yellow to show their support, and icy poles were shared afterwards as a way to finish the day on a positive note.
RUOK? Day also gave us the chance to highlight the role parents can play in keeping the message alive at home. Small actions, like asking open-ended questions about your child’s day, listening without rushing to solve problems, and noticing changes in mood or behaviour, can make a big impact. Sharing your own experiences and how you cope with challenges also helps young people feel more comfortable opening up when they need to.
At Pearl Coast Gymnastics, we are proud of how our athletes embraced the RUOK? message. We hope the skills they practised will stay with them throughout the year, reminding them that support is always close by. Together, we can create a culture where no one feels they have to go through tough times alone.
